Google 宣佈以 125億美元收購 Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (即 Motorola 手機業務部份) . Google 於新聞稿中表示 Motorola 將會繼續保持獨立運作 . 而 Motorola 將繼續推行 Android 手機業務 .
Google CEO Larry Page表示併購 Motorola 將會大幅度加強 Android 平台的生態系統有利於消費者、合作夥伴與開發人員 .
其實 Google 收購 Motorola 主要是想取得 Motorola 於行動裝置的大量專利技術 , 以抗衡近期 Apple 及 Microsoft 的專利訴訟 , 以保證 Samsung、HTC 等 Android 合作伙伴的安全 .2007年開始，Motorola 成為 Open Headset 聯盟的創始會員 , 致力於打造真正開放的行動裝置平台 Android . 2008年 更宣佈全線產品採用 Android 系統 . 即因此舉而令涉死的手機業務得以翻身 . 因此 Motorola 擁有大量行動裝置專利 . 一方面可以在專利戰中有效防守 , 甚至可能主動出擊制衡其他競爭者 .
